It’s early twentieth-century China. The vast majority of the citizenry is poor dirt farmers, growing and harvesting a meager living off of the land. Contrary to the general public, a farmer named Wang Lung has managed to rise from dirt to gold, poverty to wealth. When he has sons, however, they end up no longer respecting their elders, no longer farming the land, and no longer honoring the gods or giving them credit for their family’s success. In The Good Earth, Wang Lung’s children are raised in an atmosphere of privilege, leading them away from their family’s traditional values.
Family by Pa Chin is a captivating novel that describes what life in China was like in the twentieth century. Confucianism, a big religion in China at the time, was heavily focused on filial piety. Filial piety is the relationship of obedience, in which the elders are to be respected by the younger generation (Wu, lecture notes, 2015). This religion was one of the main structures on how the society was ran. Chin represents how the younger generation was upset with how the old traditions of the Confucian system were ran and that they were ready to change it.
Buddhism has been and still is important to the Chinese culture, affecting many traditions and ways of life. Many scholars and political figures have reacted differently to the affect of Buddhism and how it has spread through the 6 chinese dynasties, by believing its effect, disagreeing, and have no say. Many different scholars believe in the success of Buddhism across the 6 dynasties. Many ruins of Buddhism are around China which help lead many scholars to believe that Buddhism had an affect on the different dynasties. For example, document 2 is a picture of Buddha carved out of a rocky cliff that was near the Tang capital.
Culture is a human phenomenon that is infinitely changing, evolving and being added upon. In East Asia, culture changed and stayed the same whether it be from contact with external forces such as foreign civilizations or changes in societal beliefs. This was never more evidently displayed than in China, which had many continuities and changes of its culture from 220 BCE to 1368 CE. From the beginning of 220 BCE to 1378 CE, Chinese culture changed in its outlook on certain classes and types of people. However, it stayed the same in its outlook of themselves and their own superiority.
The Mythological Chinese Kingdom portrays ancient times, while the Junior High School portrays modern times. The Mythological Chinese Kingdom consists of fruit flower mountain, monkeys, heavens, and demons. Although this is to portray the ancient times, the monkeys are acting in accordance with the words of “today’s society”. The monkeys, the demons, and the people talking with suggestive references like, “Your peaches look extra plump today”, (1). Although this is connected to Ancient China, this is definitely not the way the Chinese spoke to one another.

China’s economy today is much different than that of what it was over three thousand years ago. China’s dynasties were heavily impacted not only by their dynasties, but also by: the wars that they have engaged in, the religious affiliations and Confucianism, and an assortment of different changes in technology, economy, and social and political systems. China’s civilization has experienced great changes that bring it to the country that is known today—some of the biggest changes have come within the times of the dynasty changes. Most of China’s civilization was built upon Confucianism, agriculture, and expansion—mostly with the use of wars.

Legalism, which was created by Han Fei, is an example of change through time as many punishments got weaker and strict laws were declined. On the other hand, one of the main philosophies that show continuity is Confucianism and the ideas of respecting the superior people were developed throughout time. In fact, Mandate of Heaven, a belief of rulers receiving blessings of the gods, is also an example of continuity in philosophies. In summary, during the time period between 221 B.C to 618 A.D in China, Legalism went through many significant changes, while Confucianism and Mandate of Heaven stayed constant.

Different periods throughout China’s history have different names, known as dynasties, for the diverse positions within its society. Theoretically, all of the periods are similar, with the government and military officials ranking high in the hierarchy, and the average everyday people being under regular Chinese law. Throughout China’s history, the society has been organized into a hierarchic system of socio-economic classes, known as the four occupations. The four occupations system seems to have become distorted after the commercialization of Chinese culture during the Song Dynasty. Even though the social rankings within the country are not as predominant as they once were, the people living within the country still know their “place” within the society.
Floating about in all types of literature, there are many legends as to how the earth was created; these legends are known as creation myths. A creation myth offers answers to questions that ask how the earth was created, and explains the social customs of today as well as the workings of the natural world by telling an elaborate story. The Cherokee Indians have spread their beliefs on this topic throughout generations through oral tradition. Religion in Classical China Since human’s earliest years, we have relied on religion to guide us in countless situations; it influences almost everything we do. During the Classical Period in China, religion played large roles in many significant decisions. The three most prominently displayed religions at the time were Legalism, Confucianism, and Daoism. Though their unique teachings separated them from each other, each had equal impacts in the shaping of early Chinese civilization and culture.
