Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand is a revolutionary book that tells of the horrors of man, but also the miraculous transforming love of Christ. He gives first hand testimonies of the impact that the love of God has on the individual and those that surround them. Even though many of men’s hearts are bitter once God is removed the example of God’s unconditional love shines through His people and can transform their hearts of stone.
The purpose of Richard Wurmbrand’s book Tortured for Christ is to rally Christians to support their brother and sisters in captive nations. He sends out a plea for help to those who seem to be turning a blind eye to the horrors of Communism. Wurmbrand hopes that his book will shed light on the true distresses of persecuted Christians to the ignorant. Rather than turning a blind eye, Wurmbrand pleads with them to raise support and show their faith by extending their unconditional love and to be a light in this world, an example to others. When a person gives their soul to Christ in a captive nation Wurmbrand describes it as bittersweet. It is sweet because the individual now knows the love of God, but it is bitter because they know that soon there will be a price to pay. In captive nations someone cannot be a lukewarm Christian; they are either all in or out. A half hearted faith is not worth living when their life is at risk. Today many western Christians lack this passion. Faith is something that is merely there. Western Christianity is filled with soft gospel and people who wear masks with faith that is often so questionable. They need not worry if their faith will cost them anything substantial.
