I think some of the best meals that I’ve eaten has come from food trucks. There’s just something about the sense of discovery when you stumble upon a food truck at just the right time. You peer in and chat to some colourful and friendly cooks as you decide what tasty sounding treat will best satisfy your cravings. The aroma smacks you in the face as you watch over the counter to watch the cooks prepare the food for you in real time. Then, you get it, that piping hot handheld mass of deliciousness. There’s nothing quite like it. So when Traralgon’s new Mexican restaurant Arriba Cantina boasted that their establishment is the answer for anyone looking “fresh, tasty, Mexican-style street food”, I had to try it for myself.

If you were to be cruel and deprive me of all but one word to describe this dish, then I’d begrudgingly give you the word fresh. There isn’t a better word to describe it. The chips aren’t merely crisp, they disintegrate upon contact with the teeth. Creating a crunch so intense you may fear for a moment that it has produced enough decibels to shatter the windows. This, paired with the lively guacamole and salsa that you innately know has been prepared recently makes for a dish full of life.
As for the tacos themselves, there were pleasant enough. I had been a little nervous as I’m not one for spicy food. But I had been assured by the staff that none of the dishes would dangerously hot on my delicate tongue. Ture to their word, when I bit into my little tacos they were no spicier than the mild curry I make for myself at home.
