Imagine a society controlled by the government, where one is constantly monitored and no one has any individual rights. Dystopian novels such as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell depict these potential totalitarian ruled societies and attempt to act as cautionary tales for future generations. Through their novels, both authors have shown how government control and new technology could limit the freedoms of the individual people. In the dystopian societies that are seen through both novels, the totalitarian government creates a world where the idea of individuality vanishes and human’s thirst for knowledge ceases to exist. As a result of the acquiescent people, the public began to believe many off the fallacies that were put forth by the government. The totalitarian government that is present in 1984 also uses multiple tactics to keep control over their citizens. In the novel, Winston describes how the Thought Police would take people away if they thought of a committing a crime. Another tactic used throughout the novel are the posters that say “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU,” (Orwell 2). These posters by the Party attempt to convey fear into the people’s minds to prevent them from even thinking about committing a crime. The government in the novel also has amassed such a large amount of power that they have taken all liberties away from their citizens. “ Syme had vanished…Syme had ceased to exist; he had never existed.”(Orwell 147). From this quote it is evident that the government has such a large amount of power that they can take people away to be reprocessed. Throughout 1984 Winston discusses how the government has gained control over the history of Oceania so they can have control of both the present and the past. As Winston states “ Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten…every date has been altered...History has stopped. ”(Orwell 155). This quote depicts how the Party wanted its people to forget the past in order to make them question what is fact and what wasn’t. This concept of the people questioning whether or not something was true or not was seen with Julia when discussing who invented the airplane. (Orwell 154). In the novel, after hearing this Winston and Julia begin to debate over the issue ultimately arriving at the conclusion that the all news is a lie. This concept of a government controlling history is also seen throughout Brave New World. This concept of a government censoring history is also seen throughout Huxley’s novel, however through a different manner. In the novel Brave New World the government controls history by forcing people to live in the present and not worry about the past. As Mustapha Mond says to his people while touring the Hatchery, “History is Bunk”(Huxley 34).
