Lord of the Flies Biblical References/Totemism What is Totemism? Totemism is the practice of believing in a spiritual wooden totem. Totem’s can be compared to a symbol or emblem of a native tribe. They have many different sections carved into them. They can represent memories, values or a tribe’s history. As well, as their spirit animal. The word Totem comes from the Ojibwa word “ototeman”, which means one’s brother-sister kin. Totemism in Lord of the Flies Totemism isn’t really shown in lord of the flies but, there are symbols in the book that could relate to this practice. For example, in chapter eight of the novel, the boys decide to put the dead sow’s head on a stick, for a peace offering to the beast. However, Simon has some hallucination and has a brief conversation with the sow. The sow is known as the lord of the flies. The lord of the flies tells Simon that the beast isn’t something they can kill but, is something inside each one of the boys.
