The recent merger between NRL and TFA will benefit both sports in many ways in the near future. For over 50 years, Rugby league has been the hegemonic sport in Australia and still is today. Touch football has been marginalised by rugby for just as long as rugby’s reign in the sports media. This merger was seen in the eyes of the NRL leaders as an important step in increasing the popularity of both sports while also saving money and time. Touch Football Australia (TFA) almost has the same amount of participants as National Rugby League (NRL) and is also available for a larger age group ranging form five to seventy years old. The importance of the merger is a key aspect in the development of NRL and TFA alike.

Touch has more than 500 000 participants, where rugby only has around 40 000 more people. Should touch football alter the way the game is played? I think if TFA made the game more hands on, such as a three second grab, it would appeal to NRL followers and players. Making touch more of a contact sport would make it resemble rugby a fair bit more, although this change will increase touch footballs popularity, it would also ruin the point of touch football. I believe that TFA should gradually increase its popularity alongside NRL; this would secure new touch football fans as well as slowly increasing the amount of converted rugby fans. It examines how social status impacts the type and level of participation by the different groups that comprise society. The structural level is concerned with the way society considers factors such as race, gender or possible disabilities. As well as everything else, it’s also concerned in the way recourses, rewards and status is distributed to different sectors. It looks at the allocation of resources and how the distribution might impact access and fairness. The structural level encourages us, this new merger will hopefully encourage new people to step up and take on touch as a regular outlet. Seeing all these new people being active members will be the push for a lot of people to become involved with something
