Saying Goodbye to Anger In the novel Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson Cole overcomes his anger and problems. He gets rid of his anger by, doing the dance of anger, soaking in the cold pool, and carrying the ancestor rock up the hill. When he does these things Cole learns to overcome his anger and find peace within himself. One of the biggest ways Cole overcomes his anger is by doing the dance of anger. This dance helped him to overcome his anger because when he danced all his anger was drained from his body. His anger was drained from his body when he relived the pain, cold, and loneliness from the night of the attack. “I forgive you he cried loudly. I forgive you.” This is Cole saying that he forgives the Spirit bear for attacking him. When doing this he learns that if he clears his mind by breathing deeply and only focusing on the cold water his mind will clear taking the anger with it. He knows that his soak is never finished until his mind is cleared and his is at peace with himself and everything around him. When he is finally calm and his anger is gone he can get up and leave the pond. If he is completely calm then sometimes animals will approach him in the pond such as fish or beavers they will only do this if his mind is completely cleared of any thoughts and anger. When this happens he considers himself “invisible.” “He breathed deliberately imagining himself as calm as the pond” Mikaelson uses this simile to explain to us how sitting in the cold pool every morning and imagining the calm still surface Cole is relieved of his anger. Soaking in the pool every morning helps Cole to realize that he has to overcome his anger to heal. Cole still carries the ancestor rock up the hill everyday after his soak to help himself deal with his
