HISTORY OF SOCIAL MEDIA Social communication has roots back to biblical days, with notes being hand delivered and in later times by horse routes. The Telegraph, created in 1790’s, added a faster route for message delivery, followed by the telephone and radio in the 1890’s. While communication had not progressed very fast for centuries, the 20th century brought vast changes. Super Computers were being developed in the 1940’s that filled an entire room. By the 1980’s home computers were beginning to find their way into individual homes, giving birth to blogging sites, Chat sites, Myspace, LinkedIn, and YouTube as early forms of social media. Users can ask questions and look to others for answers. Through these channels, Disney brings their brand into the lives of their followers, without commercials, thus implanting the desire to visit a park or view an upcoming movie, take a cruise, or even pull out a longstanding classic Disney DVD, dust it off and watch an animated feature.
