In 1905, one of the largest independent food retailers in the nation, H-E-B, was founded by Florence Thornton Butt. Florence invested $60 to start the small grocery store to support her family and her husband, who was suffering from tuberculosis. The first store was opened under the name C.C. Butt Grocery Store started as a small, family-owned store in Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country. In 1919, Florence turned management of the business over to her son, Howard Butt, who changed the store’s name to C.C. Butt Cash Grocery and later H.E. Butt Grocery Company.
