Most people know the lottery as a contest to win money. But in the short story, “The Lottery,” written by Shirley Jackson, the lottery is not a simple game competing for money. In this small village’s version of the lottery, everyone must draw out of a box, and if their family is chosen then the whole family must redraw and the death of a member is decided. After the fate is decided, the rest of the village throws stones at him or her until he or she dies. The villages reasoning of this process is they believe it guarantees a plentiful crop season.
Shirley Jackson’s shorty story “The Lottery”, is about a brutal tradition that is followed by a multiple villages. In this particular village, the tradition is much faster when comparing to other villages because it only has a population of three hundred people. The “lottery” starts off when the head of each house hold take a slip of paper from a black box then whichever family ends up getting the slip of paper with the black dot wins. Then the family has to get another drawing for each family member; and in which the wife wins. Because she won, the town sacrifices her by throwing stones at her until she dies.

Likewise, the author states multiple times that parts of the traditional Lottery have changed unnoticed by the villagers. Finally, the “murder” of Tessie Hutchinson is nonchalantly committed by the entire village. To start off, a brief history of the lottery is given to the reader which quickly implants the idea that the Lottery is an event that has occurred annually for hundreds of years within the village and surrounding area without any disruption.

The morning of June 27th at ten o’clock the town people gathered between the post office and the bank to attend the annual lottery. The town people always followed this “tradition” but on the contrary it was an obligation to attend the annual event.

The short story describes how tradition can be dangerous, and when it is followed blindly it can hurt many people. Nothing shows the dangers of tradition, and its exclusivity as well as the characters devotion to the black box.

Specifically, the members of a town conduct a lottery to decide who is killed by a mob of people. The story shows that thoughtlessly following a tradition can be dangerous. The tradition of the lottery has been carried out for so long in this village that nobody even knows the reason for its occurring in the first place and nobody questions it. When Old Man Warner, the oldest man in the village, is told about other villages giving up the tradition of the lottery, he says that they are, “[A] pack of crazy fools [...]. There [has] always been a lottery [...]” (Jackson, 4). There is no reason why there has always been a lottery except that every year on June 27th, they held the lottery.

The story starts off with the whole town gathering in the town square, where Mr. Summers holds the lottery. Once everyone gathers, every family draws a slip of paper out of an old black box, and the family with the black mark on their paper gets picked. After that, each family member older than 3 years of age re-draws a slip of paper again and this time, the person with the black mark on their paper gets picked as the “lucky winner” of the lottery. In this short story, after the Hutchinson family gets drawn, Tessie Hutchinson is declared “winner” of the lottery, with her reward is being stoned to death.
Unhindered and celebrated annually, the Lottery has long been ingrained in the village society as a normal way of life. Moreover, the entirety of the village murder Mrs. Hutchinson for the sole reason of practicing a tradition. Lastly, the villagers have flagrantly forgotten about parts of the lottery, not realizing what has changed. When looking at films you have to look at every aspect of the film. When it comes to most people they will watch the film and not notice little details such as framing and editing. Now being an editor my self, this is one issue that bothers me with casual viewership of movies or any other types of film. Thats when they think the editing was just done and that it takes not effort and people think that the clips are just put together. I can safely say that this is 200% false and that being an editor takes a ton of thought and process going into how a clip is placed, how much time before cutting it or anything along those lines.
