Traditional Beliefs, Gods and Selfish Act in Denmark after the King’s Death. The Prince Hamlet of Denmark wants revenge after his father’s death, King Hamlet, because he feels very much betrayed by his Uncle Claudius taking over his father’s thrown. Prince Hamlet is betrayed by his mother Queen Gertrude who goes ahead to marry Claudius the former King’s brother in only one month. Prince Hamlet suspects his uncle for killing the King, so that he could take over the King’s thrown and marry his widow. Horatio demands the ghost to speak, but it does not. (1.1.45-50) Then, the ghost disappears at the first light of morning. Horatio decides to inform Prince Hamlet of the ghost who imitates the body of his father. (1.1.68-69) In Act I, scene 2, the King and his council meet in a room and the King comments on the whole kingdom grieving for the loss of King Hamlet. “Though yet of Hamlet our dear brother’s death/ The memory be green” (1.2.1-2). Even though some time has passed since the King’s death, Hamlet still wears his grieving clothes. King Claudius asks Hamlet, “How is it that the clouds still hang on you” (1.2.66)? This is his first act to easily deceive the king. He wants the people to think his madness is brought on by his great love for Ophelia. Ophelia reports his behavior to her father, Polonius. “Lord Hamlet with his doublet all unbraced” (Richardson 88). Polonius ask Ophelia if, “Hamlet is mad for thy love” (2.1.84). Polonius tells his daughter that her rejection of Hamlet’s letters and gifts has caused his madness, and they must report Hamlet’s actions to the king, so they do not risk King Claudius displeasure. The king decides to bring Hamlet’s two friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to the castle to observe him. The two friends inform Hamlet that players are in Elsinore. Hamlet welcomes the players. He ask a player if he would give a sample of a speech he once heard but has never been played. The speech is closely related to what the ghost has told Hamlet what happen to him. Hamlet instructs the players to perform the speech on stage in order to observe King Claudius’s reaction. If King Claudius reacts guilty to the play, then Hamlet can be sure his uncle is guilty of the murder of his father, and the ghost is telling the truth.
