The Tragedy of Puddn’head Wilson is written by Mark Twain, and published in 1894. This is a story about a slave servant named Roxana, who is owned by the noble Judge Driscoll. The judge’s wife, and Roxana had given birth simultaneously to boys on the same day. Roxy, who named her son Valet de Chambre, had a mandated responsibility of raising the heir, Tom Driscoll after his mother dies. After a while, Roxy began to compare the two children’s fate. She recognized that her son would be subjected to the inhumane restrictions of involuntary enslavement, and the heir, Tom, would grow up in the glories of privilege. Roxy was excited to see the outcome of her project, but “Tom’s” character was disheartening. “Tom” was disrespectful, spoiled, and privileged. Roxy was compelled to inform “Tom” that he was thirty-three percent black, and her son. “Tom’s” reaction to this information was negative, but Roxy promised “Tom” to keep it a secret with conditions. Soon thereafter, “Tom” began his burglarizing spree throughout Dawson’s Landing. “Tom” decided to break-in to the twins’ home, stole a bejeweled knife owned by the twins with the intentions of selling it. After a short time, he was caught attempting to steal money by his uncle, so he stabbed, and killed him with the stolen knife. The Italian twins walked in after the crime was committed, they were arrested, and charged with the murder. “Tom” never admitted to killing his uncle. The twins trusted Puddn’head, so he defended them in court. Puddn’head ran into a discrepancy with a set of fingerprints. “Tom’s” prints matched Roxy’s son, Valet.
