“How to train your dragon” Made in 2010, directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. These two people have directed the film, and because of that, they have made the audience feel sympathy throughout the film as if the characters were real people that they know. Sympathy make the audience feel more exited about the film, more interested to see what happens next, but the main purpose, is to make us understand a character’s problems or feel sorry for a certain character. The film codes used to create sympathy from the audience are “character codes”, “representational codes” and also “technical codes” These codes are the building blocks of almost the entire film. Firstly, the character code represents the dialogue of a character within a given scene. Secondly, the representational code refers to the development of a character based on the culturally specific context it is situated in. Finally, the technical code surrounds the filmmakers’ choice of equipment to construct a media-related text. Character codes are evident within the film to engender sympathy for the protagonist, Hiccup.
