Assignment Choice #2: Training and Organizational Culture The worst training experience I have ever had was with my previous employer PetSmart in Mason, Ohio. Like many other retail companies, training at PetSmart focused on understanding the culture, mission, vision, and goals of the company. However, unlike those of my past employers, I was not taught by a trainer or had guidance from a human resource representative during my training for the PetSmart pet hotel. Instead, my general manager handed me a large booklet and instructed me to sit in front of a training computer placed in the company lunch room for self-guided training. Proper learning transfer provides the correct kind of support in the workplace (Malamed, 2014). Trainers understanding that learning takes time and can promote a strong alignment between the training program, organizations goals, and new knowledge and skills (Malamed, 2014). Support from supervisors and peers can also provide positive consequences when new skills are used. Those organizational cultures that promote employee growth and development, encourage employee initiative which will have a positive impact on training success (Ballesteros-Rodríguez, De Saá-Pérez, & Domínguez-Falcón, 2012). Along with motivation, a trainees perception of learning that is useful, valuable, and relevant can influence ones perception of training. Those companies that acknowledges that an associate needs to improve their performance allows their employees to believe that their new skills will improve their performance and motivate them to transfer their training and new skills to their job positions (Hofmann, 2015). However, an employees desire for growth and motivation is only as strong as a company's culture of learning as a value.
