Lewis, Clark, and The Romatics The nineteenth century was a time full of adventure and discovery led predominantly by men. Much of the literature written at this time in America mimicked that theme. A man would venture into unknown territory, fight treacherous villains, be proclaimed a hero, and of course save a damsel in distress. This type of literature was called Romantic, which also put a large emphasis on the beauty of nature.
Prior to the civil war american s had illusions of innocence and isolation from the forces of history. After studying literature from the period known as realism, we know that these writers used their words to portray realistically america’s various social issues and struggles such as states rights, slavery, and death. These writers portrayed social issues and the struggles of ordinary people. No longer did the literature contain the supernatural of the romantic period. On the contrary, works such as “Follow the Drinking Gourd”, “War is Kind” and “ Letter to Son” changed america’s idea of innocence and isolation from the horrors of history because the civil war was the only war where every death was American.
Being Determined The Odyssey, by Homer, is an epic poem that is about a hero's journey to come home. There are multiple ways in which Dark Romantics can be differentiated from the greater whole of American society during the early to mid-1800s. Unlike their predecessors, the Dark Romantics believed that humans were intrinsically sinful, and prone to self-destruction. Their pieces also include overriding themes of mystery, death, and the macabre. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat,” is a prime example of a Dark Romantic piece, as it encompasses the niche community’s core principles, and how they viewed ethical dilemmas.
Both philosophies were very similar to each other since the two movements were a reaction against the contemporary strict traditions, laws, and religious rules.
