INTRO A variety of leadership styles were displayed within the film, Remember the Titans, and it was apparent that transformational and servant leadership were the most effective styles of eliminating discrimination and encouraging growth as a team. Nevertheless, the film was a wonderful example of Tuckman’s (Tuckman's Theory: Five Stages of Team Development, 2021) theory: Five Stages of Team Development which is important to capturing the concepts and the functionality of servant leadership. He was blind to this until Coach Boone pointed out his treatment of only half the players and with this awareness, Coach Yoats began to treat all players the same. Similar to Coach Boone, Coach Yoats had his own challenges that tested his loyalties between his own accolades or the teams. This was captured during a mid-season game when the Titans were losing due to poor penalty calls and coincidently occurred after the high school football coach hall of fame nominee’s dinner and the commissioner hinted to Yoats that Boone would not be head coach much longer. With this knowledge and current outcome to the game, Yoats made the decision to intervene with a subtle threat that would jeopardize the referee, the association, and ultimately himself, however, the poor calls ceased and resulted in the Titans winning the game. In the beginning, he would not accept that Coach Boone was promoted to the role as head coach and attempted to usurp Coach Boone but that was short lived. He began to understand that Coach Boone wants to develop more than football players, he wants to develop respectable men to represent the team and community. This was apparent by how enthralled he was with Coach Boone’s speech at Gettysburg Address and after the assignment Coach gave the team. He became aware of his blindness and realized a few of the white players were not doing their parts/roles for the black players and he took action to fix it. His action was the starting point for the team to become cohesive and they began the Norming stage. Moreover, an example of his leadership was when he made the decision to kick his friend off the team due to his lack of team work.
