When a child is born they go through the process of figuring out who they really are, as well as who they want to be. Society in many ways negatively impacts the freedom a child has whilst exploring this phase in life. It dictates what to do, and what not to do. Strong parental figures help shield young kids away from society at large and allow them to make their own decisions without any fear. Through reading the pieces “My son is Gay” and “I like to wear dresses” and Ivan Coyote we see how hatred directed towards children for just being themselves often discourages children from exploring their gender.
This is helpful to her audience who may not already know the exact definitions. Rogers further includes logos with the statement “by suggesting that gender doesn’t exist and that you are only the sex you were assigned at birth, your argument is that transgender people don’t exist.” (Rogers,par.16). Understanding that gender and sex are not the same, and that they are able to exist at the same time, will enlighten the audience to understand the deserved rights of transgender individuals. Pathos is further included in the article with Rogers expressing that it is important to “honor and respect the rights and dignity of all women, however they identify.”
At the rally a transgender foster youth, Tylen, stood in front of the house telling her story. She said, “when I met my parents, who are a same-sex couple, they are the best fathers that I could ever ask for. Taking away the fact that they can be parents to me and my foster brother, that means you’re taking away the fact that they have the ability to connect with me in a way that the people in group homes couldn’t. My other foster parents couldn’t even understand me,” the youth claimed that her parents were denied placement 30 times — said at the rally. ( Saunders,
All over the country children are brought up with parents that don’t consider gender and sexuality to be valid and when school don’t acknowledge this either they may need to research on their own what they are feeling, which can be damaging to a young person’s thoughts as they will believe that all the adults around them do not desire for them to have awareness of their feelings. In some cases, these children are never taught what they feel to be legitimate and perfectly acceptable. It is only when these children become adults that they realise that the way the feel is not amiss. When analysing a negative article, it is valuable to also view an article that displays the
Jason Dunlap was awarded “employee of the year” four times and has shown remarkable work ethic in his job. His sexual orientation and gender should not and did not impact the work he had accomplished for LaMark Elementary school during his ten years of employment. During this time, the school even recognized him for his outstanding work, regardless of the fact that he is transgender. Undergoing a sex change does not change Jason Dunlap’s work ethic, and therefore is in no way a justification for the intolerance Mr. Dunlap was faced with. This case is about the discriminatory actions of a bigoted school board and faculty.
Christian author Madeline Kirksey said she was fired as the manager of Children 's Lighthouse Learning Center because she refused to go along with parents who decided to recognize their little girl as a boy. A six year old girl has been attending a private school in Katy, Texas for the last four months as a little girl. The child’s parents are a same-sex couple, two men, who “decided” that she was transgender. The child’s parents cut the girl’s hair short and workers at Children’s Lighthouse were told to begin calling the girl by a boy’s name.
When discussing gender-neutral bathrooms, Laik references the copious amount of search results with the keywords “Transgender Teens, Bathrooms, Sexual Assault Risk, Higher Rates” in order to make the point to Jill that having bathrooms that they feel comfortable in is a necessity (Fischer). Jill analyzes the issue through the lens of her cisgender privilege, while Laik opens up another perspective by using the articles as evidence to prove to Jill that non-binary people are more unsafe in bathrooms. Another example of Fischer utilizing logos is when Laik explains how difficult it is to navigate life outside of what is typically accepted by society: “Like, if gender was a choice I would stick with the gender I was assigned at birth” (Fischer). Throughout their argument, Jill argues that “[t]he LGBTQ community needs to come up with better words than they/them. Find words that don’t already have meaning” (Fischer).
A common belief of many people throughout the world, specifically America, is that a woman is only a woman if she can bear children. As exemplified by Trans Justice in the following excerpt, “transphobic violence is justified using medical theories and religious beliefs, and is perpetuated in order to preserve US heterosexist values” (TransJustice 228) The theory that only persons who are biologically female can be a woman is a violence against trans women, which is perpetuated daily within the American societal norm of the gender
The LGBTQ community is one that faces an ongoing storm of stereotyping and stigmas and the media is no relief from it. One major factor in this is the common trope of the violent and aggressive transgender woman, which is often shown through
In this paper I will be discussing how Boys and Girls Clubs are used as a deterrence method to keep “at-risk” children off the streets. These programs are all across the country in inner cities and in rural areas. I will be using the Boys and Girls Club to look at its relationship with Social Disorganization theory. The Boys and Girls Club has been around since 1860, when three women decided to open their doors to underprivileged boys. They “believed that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative” (Boys & Girls Clubs of America).
Canadians take pride in their health care system; however, most Canadians are unaware of the disparities that exist for transgender persons within health care. Being ridiculed, denied care, or treated unjustly because of a self-identification as transgender goes against the core values of the nursing profession (Canadian Nurses Association, 2009); despite this, ten percent of transgender participants in the Ontario Trans PULSE survey reported that they had experienced these demonstrations of prejudice when accessing emergency room services. This statistic may be lower than the reality due to transgender persons frequently avoiding the health care system (Bauer & Scheim, 2015). According to the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics (2009) nursing staff are expected to provide, “safe, compassionate, competent, and ethical care” (p. 3); however, due to lack of policies and lack of education nursing staff and physicians are detrimentally adding to the stressors of transgender life.
Trump says Transgender people can’t serve in the military in the U.S. Transgender is a person who is not of the right gender and wants to turn into the other gender and most Of the time they get surgery so they can look like how they want to. President Trump has announced that the year after the Pentagon lifted its ban on Transgender to be in the military. In the U.S. today some Transgender people want to join the military but Trump will not let them in the military and this is making them mad and not just the people who think it not right. Transgender can’t join the military in the U.S.today.
Transgender is the term used to describe an individual whose gender identity does not align with their sex assigned at birth. The documentary, “Growing up Trans”, is a sensitive clip to watch about young youths who attempt to navigate family, friends, gender, and the medical decisions they face at puberty. “Growing up Trans” focuses mainly on transitioned young youths. The transgender youth from the documentary links to many theories from chapter eight. Theories such as socialization, gender, sexuality, homophobia, transphobia, and microaggression are associated with “Growing up Trans”.
Transgender stereotyping has come a long way. It used to not be understood, let alone accepted. It has taken many years, and the world has started to comprehend the changes transgender individuals want to make. We often take changes like these and pay no mind to them, because it is only human nature to judge others unlike you. It is unknown to us, therefore we are apprehensive about it.
The term “transgender” is a label that was never used until the mid 1960s. According to history, “Psychiatrist John F. Oliven of Columbia University coined the term transgender in his 1965 reference work Sexual Hygiene and Pathology (“Transgender”)”. When a transgender person desires to be the opposite gender, they may get an invasive surgery to fully transition into their new identity. Multiple transgender people have started to announce the having of the surgery has destroyed their future (Bindel). People have the right to be whatever gender they aspire to be, but transgender people should do public activities and should stay grouped with their biologically assigned sex.
