Only some Americans might be aware that a present transgender employee is protected against any employment discrimination because of his or her status as a transgender. What is gender? Gender is the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones). Transgender is an umbrella term for a person whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not match to what typically is associated with the sex to what they were assigned as at birth. Rising visibility, unprecedented advocacy, and changing public opinion are working to provide transgender people greater legal protections than ever before. At the same time, many transgender people, particularly transgender women and transgender people of color, still face enormous barriers to their safety, health and well-being”- Glaad. Transgender people are constantly discriminated against in their own community. Such as in public accommodations. Public accommodations are places freely accessible to the public, such as retail stores, restaurant, parks, public, libraries and banks. In a recent 2014 study conducted in Massachusetts, 65% of transgender people reported experiencing discrimination in a place of public accommodation in the past 12 months. Often, transgender people who feel like they are being discriminated in public accommodations have increased in physical and emotional health problems. Studies shows that because of discrimination, transgender mostly tend to stay away from any health care provider. Only 18 states prohibit discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of gender identity, covering just only 36% of Americans.
Some transgender people experience a certain amount of discomfort within themselves with their gender identity. It can be frustrating and confusing knowing that you are a bit different than others. Especially when your own community discriminates against you. The process of self realization is different for each person. Some of us begin exploring other forms of gender expression at an early age, while others may begin much later in life. Zzyym identifies as neither male nor female, so they were denied the right to a passport after refusing to select a gender box on the application.
