In Andy Mulligan's novel 'Trash', they present a group of main characters, in this text response I'll be talking about 'Raphael Fernandez,' a young man that lives in poverty. During the book trash Raphael develops quickly, compared to the start of the book where he has a very dull life working every day. During the middle however, he shows how smart he really is by showing the way he can figure Jose's puzzle out. In the end he has become a mature being with his future planned out.
The start of the novel presents 'Raphael Fernandez' as a young, poverty struck kid living inside of a dumpsite, also how he lives day by day looking for stuff to sell for food. Some evidence of this could be the quote by 'Raphael' "hoping to find something to sell, all day sun or rain over the hills we go". One event that definitely changes 'Raphael' is when the police try to interrogate him while they severely abuse him. This changed him socially and mentally by showing how hard life really is, also how especially in a corrupt place like 'Behala'. You can't always trust everyone, is a thing that everyone once learns in their life and this story shows how 'Raphael' has learnt. This quote "I am sorry for deceiving you sister" here this shows how he feels towards his actions and the way he can take responsibility for those actions. Another quote that shows this is "because I think this is my fault". This part in 'Raphael's' life is definitely a part he'll remember because of how hard it would've been.
