The war affects everyone, from soldiers to their families and their friends. A war is one of the most dramatic events that a person can experience in his life and for the loved ones too. In the story A very short story by Ernest Hemingway, despite its brevity, we can see this thesis very clear. For that reason in this essay we’ll discuss how in this story we can the posttraumatic trauma after the war of a character. Also we’ll analyze how this event affects his relationships with the nurse and his future. An astonishing number of soldiers when comeback from the war have insomnia, drugs or alcohol problems and also sexual problems. That’s occur because all the things they saw in the battle field. The department of Veteran Affairs of the United States says that 95% of the soldiers saw dead bodies in Iraq, 89% were attacked and 86% of the soldiers know someone that was killed or was injured in the war-zone. Also they say that many of the soldiers go back to home with alcohol problems. This is the case of the character of the Hemingway’s story. This American soldier went back to Chicago and contracted gonorrhea while riding a cab. In this story we don’t see that extreme situation, but we can see other side effects as what happens to the loved ones of this people, we’ll discuss that later. As many literary critics says the soldier that which have in this story is a young one. How a young person can choose to die in life, instead of solving his problems. We think that the character brought the Thanatos of the WWI with him, and if he carried the Thanatos it’s almost impossible resolve that. Regrettably, many soldiers went back to their houses with this negative energy and never resolve that, because it’s much deeper than we can
