In the magazine article “Football Under Fire” the author introduces problems that football players face, such as concussions. Lately, Accidents on the field have been under observation which includes concussions (the action of the brain being shaken in the skull); brain traumas are being observed as well. These head accidents have been found to cause damage to the nerve cells in the brain; the damage may then lead to a “serious brain disorder called chronic traumatic encephalopathy also known as CTE.” In the “2015 season” alone, at least “5 players were killed due to injuries during games.” In that case, some injuries are still not able to be prevented even with padding and helmets, such as being paralyzed due to hard hits or other injuries.
This film tells the true story of a forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu who discovers neurological deterioration that is similar to Alzheimer's disease in former NFL player Mike Webster. Omalu publishes his findings and names the disorder chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is the result of taking too many hits to the head. As other athletes face the same diagnosis, Dr. Omalu embarks on a mission to raise public awareness about the dangers of football-related head trauma. This film shows how serious concussions in the NFL really are and that people need to be more aware of the long-term side effects that come with football-related head injuries. Scientist have proven that damage to the brain caused by concussions can last for decades after the original head trauma.
According CNN’s article “NFL Concussion Fun Facts,” there have been 692 combined concussions diagnosed throughout the preseason and regular season in the NFL over the past 3 years. It may be evident by these numbers that the NFL has a major problem with players getting concussions, and over the years their concussion protocol has been questioned by former players and other people around the football community. Ken Belson stated in his article “Brain Trauma to Affect One in Three Players, N.F.L. Agrees,“ that a third of retired football players are subject to long term brain issues, these issues may include the disease known as CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) which has been brought to light in a more recent time. CTE has effected a good
Concussions are a huge problem in the world of sports today with numerous dangerous effects. Although some precautions have been taken to prevent concussions, better safety precautions must be taken. The statistics about concussions during the course of a player’s football career, whether it be just to college or all the way to the professional level, show a very big danger to the athletes. During a game players are seven times more likely to get
The study on retired football players previously mentioned provides evidence that there could be cumulative effects of concussions on the frontal lobe. EEG’s ability to measure frontal lobe abnormality could be used as an assessment tool for identifying players that are suffering from the effects of repeated concussions. This is important for maintaining the health of people who choose to participate in high impact sports. Understanding the repeated effects of concussions and potentially being able to measure them could provide players with an opportunity to make an informed decision about continuing their athletic
An NFL football player will endure somewhere between 900 to 1500 blows to their head over the course of a single season. With an immense amount of blows like this comes an immense amount of damage to a player’s brain. This extensive amount of brain damage has been decided, by Dr. Bennet Omalu, to result in chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Over the course of these discoveries and much controversy, the NFL has been targeted, denied all accusations, done very few things to lessen the risk of concussions in football, and the risks and number of concussions have steadily increased throughout the league’s
Some of the tests revealed damage to the amygdala which controls mood. Additionally the NFL players scored much lower on memory tests, and had worse verbal skills (Hedin, 2015) 5. Due to the recent number of suicides & violent crimes committed by former players, there is more of a need to research the correlation between the head injuries in the NFL and brain disease even more C. Thesis Point 3: What steps the National Football league has taken to protect players long term health and safety 1. With the scrutiny the NFL has come under, they have developed a new protocol for the diagnoses and treatment of players with concussions 2. Though the game of football continues to be played in the United States, it also seems that these types of life-changing injuries are still being overlooked even to this day. While there are some better precautions being taken to prevent injuries like concussions and other similar trauma, the NFL purposely hides the real truth in order to ensure the ongoing popularity of the sport. Overall, football continues to grow as one of America’s most popular sports, yet its reputation as being a traumatic and life altering activity is still overlooked by many. Despite the overwhelming evidence that points to an increased risk for post traumatic brain diseases like dementia or Alzheimer 's, many young athletes still aspire to succeed and continue playing the sport. Though mainstream media may be to blame for popularizing the sport of football in the first place, the organizations such as the NFL share just as much responsibility for not thoroughly educating players about the risks they take each time they play the game or simply just participate in
Anyone who has had a brain injury in the past needs to be aware of the symptoms of CTE, not only for themselves, but also for the people around them. Football causes about ten times the amount of significant brain injuries compared to other popular sports (What). A sport with as much violence as football needs to be taken seriously. Carson Simpson Mrs. Gallos English 3 Honors 24 April 2017 Concussions in Football Although football is a very popular sport, changes need to be made. There is a lot of research and data showing head injuries in football and how they hurt the players. The NFL tries to just sweep these cases away because they know it would hurt the popularity and economical support of the sport. Head injuries and concussions are the most popular injuries in football because of the fact that they are one of the most dangerous injuries a player could have.
America is obsessed with sports and competition, and one sport that signifies America is football. Today many professional football players across the country suffer from a common injury which is a concussion. This injury can threaten an athletics career and most of all permanently injure the brain. Former retired NFL players now deal with short term memory loss, and depression because of this brain injury. The increased amount of concussions in athletics today calls for more education on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of traumatic brain injury.
In the NFL every week there are injuries including concussions. In 2015 there were 199 concussions suffered by NFL players(Breslow). I punched in an adequately vague search term (football injury) and was directed to League of Denial, a book exploring the link between the NFL and brain damage. I expected it would feed my initial premise, and that I would use it as evidence of football’s mental toll. But, as I skimmed through the chapters, I
