A Traumatizing Impact on Women Within Society When a young, female girl is growing up, she encounters a variety of advertisements, entertainment, commercials, and dolls. What she does not know is that society will have an impact on her image when she gets older. Her inspiration will be drawn towards famous celebrities who are portrayed as the perfect woman. Though the young girl does not pay attention to the fact that those women are mostly photoshopped or edited. The image itself portrays that she wants to look just like that perfect girl in a magazine or off a television screen. Many celebrities are airbrushed, edited, and photoshopped, which includes showing little to no body fat, bags under the eyes, skin marks, or any other flaws most girls are associated with. This is the criteria on which teenagers measures themselves in. Based on a poll, “40% of nine and ten-year-olds have tried to lose weight at thirteen years old” (Body Image and Gender Identity, 2002), “53% of girls were unhappy with their image” (National Institute on Media and the Family). Girls start to believe that thin models and celebrities represent the norm of women because their images are displayed throughout all forms of media. Teens also start to believe they must attain the unrealistic and unachievable looks of models and celebrities to be considered beautiful and to meet societies standards. Many changes take place within eating and exercising habits to achieve the look that is unrealistic. Girls stop eating and end up starving themselves to achieve the weight that celebrities are manipulated by because they think they are overweight. To make a change; a popular magazine that is said to be read by a lot of teenage girls, Seventeen Magazine, has dwelled upon the harmful impacts media can have on a teen’s body. In effect, they had vowed to “keep photo shoots transparent, celebrate all body types, and never change the shapes of girls’ bodies or faces, so that girls will be more comfortable and proud of their bodies.” In order to establish a lasting impact for those who look up to famous people; the media should play a role in displaying images of healthy models and celebrities of all shapes and
