A Mutineers Jolly Rodger In the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson Long John Silver is a character that stands out from all the rest. He is a very clever man who can get his way in just about anything. He also plays a role in both the good side as you might call it and the bad side of the story. Although he has some very appealing qualities he also has a very dark evil side to him he is a greedy man who has puts very little value in a man’s life. That’s why for his Jolly Roger the three best things to explain him are the images of crutches, gold and a pair of cutlasses. He will do anything he can to acquire his riches at the expense of everyone around him. For example, he could have easily come away with the treasure on Treasure Island had h stayed with the loyal crew of the Hispaniola but because he wanted more money for himself and he created a mutiny. This shows, Long John Silver’s quality of greed loud and clear. He knew that if he stayed with the crew of the Hispaniola he would get some treasure but not even close to as much as if he formed a smaller group to overthrow the captain and then he could take more for himself. Also, all throughout this process he didn’t seem to care at all that he was stealing something from someone who had been working hard to get for a long time and he was going to do minimal work and take it all for himself. Gold is a perfect representation for this because of a few things. One, gold was actually what Long John Silver was going after and two, gold means money and with greed more often than not money is what people are being greedy for. This is why gold is the best symbol to represent greed in Treasure
