A trench is a long narrow ditch in the ground built as defence from the enemy in WW1. Some stretched for miles, it made it nearly impossible for the other side to attack. Most battles were fought at the Western front in France.

The CEF would taker be put to the task of capturing Vimy Ridge. Vimy ridge was very important, if captured it would give the controlling side a huge advantage to strategize and set up more tactical opportunities. The evolution of warfare from 1914 to 1917 drastically changed the war for the common soldier with technological advances, attritional warfare, and the transition to trench warfare. All sides in World War I originally believed they would be home before Christmas, however with the failure of the Schiefflan plan, this was no longer the case. The Schiefflan plan was a military strategy devised by the Germans. The design was to defeat France through Belgium before devising an attack on Russia. The plan ultimately failed due to Belgium now allowing Germans to pass through their neutral territory.
The trenches were a significant change to this battle, not only in early 1914, in the first World War, but for the later wars and battles that would follow. The trench system stretched from the North coast of Belgium to the South of France. It stretched through French towns and even into Switzerland. If the trenches were laid end to end, they would stretch more than twenty five thousand miles.
Not wanting their men falling over dead without even being in battle, generals decided to try different tactics and variations to try take land quicker through trench warfare. They used a guerillastyle type of technique in which the land in between both armies, endorsed with the name No Man’s Land, would be sprinted through in order to get into the enemy’s trench, and then would kill as many enemies as possible. During this, they’d also try to destroy as much of the bunker as they could, and then would sprint back over to the ‘safety’ of their own trench. It was a petty way of fighting, and many good men died because of this brutal fighting type.

WW1 is known as the first modern war because it saw the incorporation of mechanical weapons. This meant a change for most of America such as the farmer could focus on growing a main cash crop, and not a variety of things. Farmers looked at the large money corps as cotton and grains and concentrated their efforts on those markets. Consequently, this showed farmers that they were part of the total economic market place. With this change it meant also that the farmers and others was buying what they didn’t produce, making many producers and consumers alike (Schultz, p.170, 2009).
