Those who grew up during the 1950s experienced one of the most influential decades in American history. After World War II, the 50’s was a calm and peaceful era and the society had no worries because the economy was rising which made it easier for people to be involved in the workforce. This was the decade that started rock and roll music, the introduction of the television, and transistor radios. The greatest long-term impact was the rise of rock and roll music. Rock and roll music allowed people to escape the seriousness of reality and get loose.
The 1950s was a decade of economic growth. There was a boom in babies being born due to families being more stable. The 1960s is commonly portrayed as the more chaotic decade because of the Civil rights movement's strong steps toward their goals. Whilst I agree that for many the 50s was a great decade I disagree with the idea of the 1950s being more prosperous and being more unified because for everyone that was not the case. The 1950s created the blueprint for the 60s to be a decade of revolution.
The 1950s were remembered as a time of good life and peace. At the beginning of the 1950s, there were mainly white families living in the suburbs, and they didn't have to worry about the cost of houses or the money they needed to pay the government. However, as the 1950s progressed, there were starting to be problems in the world. Those problems surrounded the suburbs and family life and issues for the people. The 1950s does not deserve its reputation as a time of peaceful conformity.
2 It is essential to go back to the fifties to be able to understand the sixties historically and sociologically. The fifties brought relief since the Depression and war were over, and now “science was mobilized by industry, and capital was channeled by government as never before.” 3 This new affluence gave the United States the ability to create suburbia and conform to moving in. This affected the sixties because conformity resulted in people rebelling.
The Berlin Wall and Great Depression were over and the new era came upon to spark the beginning of the 1950’s. The typical focus of this era was to protect families individually and preserve domesticity, and hold certain standards too succeed in life. To include, that in 1950’s, there was much improvement when it came to working and jobs. There were more white collar jobs in the office and other administrative settings such as: advertising, marketing, etc. After the Cold War, there was a vast Economic boom, people were earning money and putting money in the banks more than ever before.
As World War II came to an end, the United States entered the 50s. This decade became a major influential time that brought many cultural and societal changes. Categories such as the economy, where a boom in new products increased, the technology world which incorporated new medicines and computers, entertainment when the television became popular and the overall lifestyles that Americans adapted to. All of these topics reshaped and created several advancements throughout society during the 1950s.
There are similarities and differences between the 50s and today’s society the 50s were a bad time to be in for all people. People were discriminated by other people. Whites discriminated the blacks because of their color, blacks didn’t have the same rights as the whites and that isn’t fair. They couldn’t even drink from the same water fountain or even use the same bathroom because of the color. This also includes having problems with war but dodge it because in the article called “The Fifties”:
The 1960’s were a good time in America because it did shape our generation to be where it is today. Even though there were good aspects that came with it, bad aspects still had to follow. The 1960s was the year of getting to know yourself, self acceptance, self righteousness, and self indulgence. During this time there was a lot of violence going on because people wanted to fight for what they believed in. The rights in the constitution that were being promised to the people were never being upheld.
They had the space race, the civil rights movement , and your kids were safe too. The first reason is they had great writers and artists. In the text it says “music was the definition of the 1960’s with icons like The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Which innovated rock music , and promoted peace and love”.
1950s Technology The 1950s was the decade that defined America after the second world war. The 50s birthed many of mankind’s greatest technological feats that still shine through today. One of the biggest political and social battles also took place in the decade.
The 1960’s proved to be an era of protest, and change. Not only where people fight for causes close to their heart but they also stood in solidarity for their neighbor. Americans had right around 1965 more dramatic choices than ever before as television entertained and guerilla street theatre expressed antiwar and other themes for free. 1960s film/television and theatre were highly influential in the decade 's growth. The decade was full of many hardship and was a time of self discovery. Many drugs and psychedelics such as LSD were used at the time and made the 60s what it was. Many people needed to try new light and a certain rebellion helped that be found.
Racism was also a huge factor that seems to be hid by the appearance of the 1950s. African American and Latino families received no support from the government. Discrimination was widespread. Coontz explains that the sexism
The 1950’s brought about much change and prosperity, but was also a time of great conflict. With the end of World War II, the United States experienced a sense of safety in knowing that they had a strong military force and felt as if the worst was over. Then the scare of communism started, striking people with fear and paranoia. In which everyone worried that the spread of such a government would threaten democracy everywhere. Nevertheless, we weren’t just dealing with the risk of communism, but also with the introduction of The Civil Rights Movement.
