Makayla Gordon Mrs. Korando English 1 February 17, 2023 “Trifles” Susan Glaspell’s short story “Trifles” was inspired by a true story. The story starts off with Mrs. Wright’s husband controlled her and she seeked her revenge. She gets accused of murdering her husbands, but Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale decides to lie for her and hide the very small evidence. Because of the men not paying enough attention and the women protecting Mrs. Wright, she was never found guilty. This states that everyone should pay attention to the little things because the little things might be more important than you think. The women are in the Wright’s home gathering things to take Mrs. Wright at the jail. They pick up her quilt and notice that it looks very good towards the beginning, but they quickly wonder what happened when they realize it's been messed up and looks sloppy. The text states, “Here, this is the one she was working on, and look at the sewing! All the rest of it has been so nice and even. And look at this! It’s all over the place! Why, it looks as if she didn’t know what she was about!” (Glaspell 985). This quote explains that something happened that messed up Mrs. Wright. They didn’t know Mrs. Wright owned a bird, but they shortly found a silk box. The text states, “It’s the bird. But, Mrs. Peters–look at it! Look at its neck! It’s all–other side too. Somebody wrung its neck” (Glaspell 987). This explains that Someone had done something to the bird. In the beginning of the story it mentions that Mr. Wright loves peace and quiet. This shows that he hurts Mrs. Wright’s bird and her motive was to hurt him because of what he did. If the men would have noticed the broken bird cage, they would realize she had a motive.
