Trifles- The Interrogation
(Mrs. Wright has been taken to jail and is sitting in a small room, nervously waiting to be questioned)
Mr. Henderson: (Comes in the interrogation room and sits down, he sips his coffee and clears his throat) Alright Mrs. Wright, we both know you killed your husband. Why?
Mrs. Wright: I told you… (Nervously picks at her dress) I was asleep when he was murdered. I woke up and found him dead with rope marks around his neck.
Mr. Henderson: Mrs. Wright, there is no way you could have slept through your husband being strangled to death. He would’ve been struggling to breathe and kicked you or hit you in the process. Therefore, waking you up. It’s as simple as that, Mrs. Wright.
Mrs. Wright: (Raises her voice nervously

Henderson: Come on Mrs. Wright, what happened?
Mrs. Wright: (silent a moment) Alright, I did it! (tears in her eyes) I did it only because he killed something very precious to me. It kept me from being all alone in that dead silent home!
Mr. Henderson: (taking notes on her confession) What did he kill that was so precious to you that drove you to murder your own husband, Mrs. Wright?
Mrs. Wright: He hated the sound of my bird singing. That sweet bird would sing to me as I would do my canning or as I would sew. As that bird sang I would sing with him. That bird was my only peace. One day, my husband came in early so I covered up the cage with a sheet to make him be quiet. That didn’t help and the bird kept singing his sweet little song. My husband didn’t like it…he said he liked peace and quiet…then he reached in the cage and grabbed my bird and broke its neck. When he killed my bird, it was like he killed a part of me so I strangled him like he strangled my bird. That bird was my only friend in that quiet house.
Mr. Henderson: (Clears his throat with a look of utter shock on his face) You murdered your husband just because he killed your bird? (Clears his throat and shakes his head lightly) You women and your silly
