History of Trigonometry Web Quest
1) Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics dealing with the relations of the sides and the angles of triangles and with the relevant functions of any angles. The original trigonometric function was sine. The function has history in Babylon, Greece, India, and Arabia. The beginning of trigonometry was demonstrated with spherical triangles and astronomy. Three mathematicians that have contributed to trigonometry are Hipparchus, Aryabhata, and Sir. Isaac Newton. Hipparchus was of Nicaea, Bithynia he was recognized as the first mathematician to have possessed the trig metric table, which he needed when computing the eccentricity if the orbits of the moon and sun. The next mathematician Aryabhata was the first

The problem was to find the length of a chord subtended by a given angle.
3) The most important fact of trig functions is the discovery of mathematician Aryabhata because of his discovery of half cords you now can identify more complex angles such as the sine of 125 degrees.
4) The most obscure fact on the time line of trig functions is the coordinate plane. The functions are easy to remember but the negative and positive coordinates can often change the quadrant.
5) The most interesting history of trig functions is the involvement of Sir. Isaac Newton. Yes, he is known for his many discoveries, but I have always thought of his mathematical skills as being used solely for the growth of Science and not the introduction of a skill taught today in trigonometry.
6) The most surprising thing I learned when researching the history of trig functions is trigonometry was used to classify the solar system.
7) The founder of Trigonometry should be Aryabhata because of his detailed research he foreshadowed the use of cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent. These functions are used today in the trig table and are taught by math
