Over the past few years, we colonists have been getting more and more annoyed with the English King and want to form our own country. Growing up, my parents pushed me to do my best in school; I didn’t question it much, although looking back, I recognize that schooling is a vital component to be successful in life. I will be attending UNR this fall, the first in my family to do so. Being a first generation college student, my parents cannot provide any information regarding college classes, scholarships, or tutoring. I’ve worked diligently throughout high school but I cannot venture into college blind; TRiO would be a highly beneficial program enabling me to reach my potential in college.
Warrensburg Missouri, being a college town, is full of many opportunities such as joining Greek life, getting internships, and most impotently getting a college degree. Being the first to attend college in my family, I have been self-motivated to attend class’s everyday on a daily bases and even build time into my schedule to study for quizzes and exams. For the past four months, I have been attending the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg. Therefore, I have learned the highs and lows of being a college student at the university. Being a college student at UCM in Warrensburg has many lows.
Because of my participation on a Trio program, I was inspired in choosing Sociology as my major, and reinforced to continue to strive for my dream of one day becoming a Doctor and in a slightly different way, enriching people’s lives just like they have done for me. One of the students in my group is a nursing student who is graduating in a few months. Not only he was able to tell about his decision to become a nurse in the first place, his studying experience, requirements for entering the program, but also he was very clear and honest about his concerns about health care reform, constantly changing insurance policies, and disconnections between different health care professionals. I was able to understand his concerns and agree on issues that health care system is facing right now with constantly changing lows and “best practices”. The other student that was assigned to us is studying social work in Masters Program. I learn a lot of new things about her program such as license exam that they have to pass upon graduation and possibilities to advance her degree after masters program to independent clinical psychotherapist.
I would tell freshman what I know I could have done better or known in high school. In other words, what I believe they will need in order to succeed. In class, not be afraid to ask questions, and establish good relationships with teachers. Good relationships with teachers helps when having a hard time in class makes problems easier to fix. I would say don 't be afraid to get involved.
As a first generation college bound student, after joining Upward Bound, I have gained the skills to recognize and be proactive when I am struggling academically. I am not only able to identify aspects that is causing me difficulties but also able to create a realistic plan that fits with my learning process. I have also gained the confidence, motivation, and skills to balance and multi-task a schedule that includes a full-time academic schedule, multiple extra-curricular activities, and community services. For example, when I decided to take dual enrollment college courses through Minnesota’s Postsecondary Education Option program, I still maintained my many commitments to Harding Senior High School and volunteer activities. I chose to counsel a 3/C midshipmen who is in my squad this semester. As a fire team leader I have been fortunate to have been given many opportunities to counsel numerous midshipmen in my fire team. After my initial counseling session with the 3/C, I was able to figure out the basics such as, CQPR, ECA, aptitude, conduct grade. When this assignment presented itself to me I realized that I could use this to make significant strides on this particular 3/C midshipmen. I had decided to peruse this 3/C because her conduct and aptitude grade had fallen significantly since last semester.
Build positive relationships with students will help establish a more comfortable classroom environment. Michie have put a great amount of effort at trying to get to know his students on a more personal level, such as through individual home visiting and personal questionnaires about each student’s likes and dislikes about school. In order for students to feel that the information is relevant to them, teachers should make connections and relate to real life examples. Michie uses his past classroom experiences to connect to his students and further sparks class discussion. Michie would try to relate to what the students were going through in their lives to get to know them better.
Identifying services that predict student academic success and persistence among TRIO student is important for staff and higher education leaders at Johnston Community College. Jones and Watson (1990) noted that retention or persistence issues are critical to institutional planning and funding. Planning and funding have been greatly affected by the student retention rates. The findings from this study will also help to provide pertinent information on how to improve services that foster student success and leadership skills. This study is significant in that it will examine the factors that critically influence academic success and persistence of students enrolled in the TRIO program at Johnston Community College in Smithfield,
I have taken away many useful strategies and information from the College 101 class I took this summer. This course has given me enough information to help me feel confident that I will be successful in the rest of my highschool experience and my future college experience. This course has given me skills that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Learning to study properly, avoid procrastination, and take notes correctly has been something that has already helped me tremendously. It has helped me feel less stressed on a day-to-day basis as well as improving my school work quality.
Taking this class has had a profound impact on me. I have learned how to properly study for a college class. Also, I learned how to effectively communicate and reach out to my professor. This was my first college course which gave me a learning experience about psychology and myself as a student. I have learned how to manage my time, study in ways that are better for me, focus on the task in front of me, and reaching out and taking opportunities.
