Grace Peterson, the dynamic protagonist of this story, is a 20-year old lead line staffer at a group home nicknamed “Short Term 12.” After her mother died and a history of sexual abuse from her father, she landed in a group home very similar to Short Term 12. This inspired her to take care of children that faced similar neglect by their parents. This job is emotionally draining and requires strong leadership and organizational skills to provide for the children and keep them in line. This is why, according to the Matrix System True Colors Personality Test, Grace's Personality reflects the colors blue and gold. As a reflection of both of her gold and blue side, Grace’s job requires her to be a caring individual. All of the children in Short Term 12 have gone through very tough times in their lives and they need a strong support system to work through any issues that arise in their life. Her blue side influences how she acts towards the children, causing her to always be there for them, even when they do not ask her to be. Mark, a 17-year-old who is almost 18, is caught with a pocket knife and is pulled aside for hitting Luis, his frenemy, on the side of the head with a baseball bat. Grace pulls him aside saying, “Look, we all know you’re turning 18 in two weeks, and I know it can be a scary transition leaving this place” (Cretton 35). Once children reach the age of 18, the state kicks them out of the group home. As Mark nears the age of 18, Grace reassures him that everything will be ok as long as his current violent behaviors do not continue.
