To begin, What is the true meaning of friendship? I believe that in order to establish a true friendship we should be loyal, true, and understanding. When people are in a friendship they should be able to feel comfortable talking to each other when they are at their worst. A friendship should also consist of being able to help a friend when they are in need of help. In this story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, we find the character Candy as he is trying to help George not seem as if he was with Lennie when he had killed Curley’s wife. George said “The guys might think I was in on it. I’m gonna go in the bunk house. Then in a minute you come out and tell the guys about her. Will you do that? Even though his dog was very old he still tried to make the dog feel comfortable. Candy had loyalty to his dog because he was with Candy ever since he was a puppy. I could relate to this because recently my dog of nine years passed away and I had such a close relationship with him. It was very hard to see him pass away but I feel happy that he is in a better place. My final example of friendship I read was Lennie and George. I think George is an outstanding friend because he never let down Lennie no matter how mad he got at him. George was always so understanding with everything Lennie had done. He knew that Lennie was a little mentally weak so he had to treat him in a way that almost no one understood. They only really had each other. Just as Lennie said on the final chapter “An’ I got you. We got each other, that’s what, that gives a hoot in hell about us,” {pg 104 STEINBECK}. In conclusion I believe that a friendship can be such powerful thing. In this story almost every character showed a true act of friendship which put them on a good spot rather than a bad one. Friendship is a very valuable thing to have, and most people tend to take for granted but I believe that John Steinbeck was able to portray friendship in the best way
