In Mattie’s world the meaning of true grit is to have a lot of courage. I feel everybody except Tom Chaney has some form of true grit. For example Rooster Cogburn showed true grit because he charged against seven armed riders with two pistols on a horse by himself. However Mama has true grit because she is battling death back at home. The reason Tom Chaney has no true grit is because he is a coward.
In the book “ Johnny Tremain” written by Esther Forbes, the theme pride really stands out in the beginning of the book. In this book, it repeatedly shows pride as a bad thing. Pride is one of the few things in the world that isn’t just good or evil. Pride is only evil if you let it become more important than everything else. This is a quote by C.Lewis “ pride is a spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, contentment, or even common sense,’”
Although, in the book "True Grit" by Charles Portis the character Mattie Ross isn't your average teenage girl. In the late 1870's Mattie and her family live happily in Yell County, Arkansas. One day they suffer a great loss and Mattie takes it upon herself to seek the man who caused her family so much pain. According to google the definition of grit is having perseverance, courage and, passion. The main character Mattie shows how she has grit in a lot of different ways but, the character Tom Chaney shows no grit at all.

True Grit was published in 1968, in the novel, the story is taking place sometime after the American civil war ended. The story is narrated by Mattie, as she recalls the journey as an older woman. Mattie is a brave, independent and tough young girl. During the journey, Mattie is fourteen years old and she leaves behind her mother and younger siblings to avenge the unfair murder of her father by a man named Tom Chaney.

In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.

According to Atticus, this is the ability to face adversity and go through with something honourable, even though you realize that it is impossible to win. There are quite a few characters in the book, which show some kind of courage, but there is one in particular, Atticus. Harper Lee made Atticus the hero of moral and a symbol of courage in her novel. He is the figurehead for all three kinds of courage I mentioned. For one he confronts a rabid dog, which displays physical courage.
