James Hurts creates a depressing tone, or attitude, by using figurative language, symbolism, and imagery. This sad story is about a child who is born with a deficiency and expected to die however, lives. His brother soon realizes that Doodle is not like the other kids so he pushes him to be like the others, which actually hurts him more. Figurative Language helps show the gloomy tone throughout the story from the first paragraph onwards.
The constant death that encircles Janie is a persistent reminder that no one can defend against their finite lifespan, so instead, death should not be feared, or fought in order for new beginnings to arise. The motif of death relates to the book as a whole because both Tea Cake and Jody fear death and try to avoid it, often emotionally and physically harming Janie to their dying breath. A fear of death causes a person to live a life void of true freedom and peace. As Janie’s grandmother nears death she states, “[The] angel [with the] sword is [going to] stop by here”(15).

In the harsh world of The Road, there is a man and boy who both struggle to survive and their only hope is to cling on to the good morals. People have abandon all the good morals and have resorted to violence, murder, and cannibalism to survive.
“They live for the nursery” announces Lydia, frightened by the truthful thought (Bradbury 2). It is hard to admit painful truths, but Lydia manages to. She is, unfortunately, too late in her wake up call. The children already have a lot of “death thoughts” while in The Nursery(Bradbury 3).. It is sadly ironic that a place like the Nursery, meant to foster creativity, has the complete opposite effect on Wendy and Peter.
In the following passage from the novel We Were the Mulvaneys, Joyce Carol Oates laments that even though most everything in one’s surrounding is dying, not everyone has managed to find the adequate amount of maturity to accept the fact that they are not immortal, even though the idea of death is difficult to come to terms with. Oates conveys this universal idea and characterizes the narrator through the usage of a depressing tone and dismal imagery. The tone set in the passage is fairly dark and depressing. An “eleven or maybe twelve,” year old child should not be fixated on the idea that “every heart beat is past and gone.”
In the essay, “The Death of the Moth”, Virginia Woolf uses metaphor to convey that the relationship between life and death is one that is strange and fragile. Woolf tells the story of the life and death of a moth, one that is petite and insignificant. The moth is full of life, and lives life as if merry days and warm summers are the only things the moth knows. However, as the moth enters it’s last moments, it realizes that death is stronger than any other force. As the moth knew life seconds before, it has now deteriorated into death.

Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife.
