Darry is the older brother and provider to Sodapop Curtis and Ponyboy Curtis in the book The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. Darry’s parents died in a car accident so he was left raising his two younger brothers, which are sixteen and fourteen. Although Darry can be harsh, he still cares deeply about his brothers and their lives.

In the article, “Against Antiheroes”, Laura Bennett demonstrates the characterizations of an antihero, while providing information that allows the antihero to be depicted as prevalent. An antihero is defined as a person that does not possess heroic attributes, and may be seen as selfish, corrupt, or sullen. Antiheroes usually tend to acquire the sympathy of another individual, causing them to become relatable, as seen as Bennett writes, “‘Antihero’ implies that a character encourages a conflicted sympathy; Walt forfeited our sympathy long ago” (472). Jill Lepore’s “These Truths” provides a unique perspective on the origins of America by structuring it as a story. The 932 page book covers history beginning in the year 1492, and explains our history’s events over more than five centuries. Lepore constantly questions whether our past events have proved these ‘truths’ or deceived them. These factors allowed the author to encourage the audience to hear an alternate interpretation rather than the standard facts of the history books, and it gave a more in-depth and contingent story of how our history transformed into the America we know today. Jill Lepore has a variety of purposes, the purpose of informing, challenging, and engaging her readers.

In the book Renegades by Marissa Meyer, many things happen throughout the book that many will find interesting. This story follows two main characters, Adrian Everhart and Nova Artino/Mclain. In this world, there are these people who are prodigies with superpowers that they either inherit or are born with. There is also a Council that is made of the best superheroes or Renegades, all around the city that this book takes place in and the son of the top two Council members is Adrian Everhart with their leadership skills and the ability to make whatever he draws come to life. There are also villains in this world of heroes called the Anarchists and within these villains is the niece of the formerly ruler of Gatlon City during the Age of Anarchy.

The novel, Sula, by Toni Morrison, takes this idea to a new concept by reflecting on world wide issues that have previously occurred from around the world. It uses real life issues in order to help readers relate back to the text, and have a stronger comprehension of what the author is trying to have the readers understand. In this best selling novel, the characters convey the ways that social corruption has caused a lack of equality and human rights to be developed, and established in the society that they live in.
The patterns of trust and subsequent betrayal found in the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, serve to teach lessons about what it was like for African Americans in post-slavery America, when the book is set. The Invisible Man trusts easily and naively. Yet, despite working hard, he is betrayed by the institutions and people he looks up to as role models as they exploit his expectations for their own agenda. Overall, there are four strong examples of those taking advantage and hurting the Invisible Man. With each incident, he learns a lesson about how blatantly the black population is disregarded, along with being given an object that represents the underlying racism found in a society.

SPC: Captain Dearth, 1st Platoon The book “Black Hearts One Platoons Descent into Madness in Iraq’s Triangle of Death” by Jim Frederick is a true story about multiple leadership failures and six United States Soldiers from 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division who were convicted for their involvement in horrible crimes while deployed to Iraq. The horrific acts including rape as well as murder committed by the soldiers of 1st platoon were a direct result of poor military leadership. Bad leadership will corrupt any military unit.
