This is a first-hand source, delivered by President Harry Truman, a Democrat, introducing Executive Order 9835, at the beginning of the Cold War. Understanding that he was the current President of the United States, a world superpower and a western capitalist democracy, he was a key figure in the fight against communism. The introduction served as one of the US’ first major offensive attacks on communism. The enactment was relatively significant, being attacked by both Democrats and Republicans alike, largely due to the belief that it violated civil liberties.
