In the classical drama “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller is about the witch-hunts and trials in the seventeenth century in Salem, Massachusetts was a tragedy. Miller’s drama is a horrific tragedy because nineteen men and women and 2 dogs were we convicted and hanged for witchcraft. For instance John Proctor was put through many things throughout the play, unfair and false accusations were made about him for no reasons. Truth and lies that were made and said ended many relationships and brought forth the real truth which ended with a tragic death. The definition of a tragedy is a literary work in which the protagonist is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope …show more content…

Abigail, now beginning to anger- she can't believe it.: I have something better than hope, I think!
Proctor: Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin for you more.
Abigail: You're surely sportin with me.”(Miller 21)
Abigail:
“Abigail, grasping his hand before he can release her: John- I am waitin’ for you every night.
Proctor: Abby, i never give you hope to wait for me.
Abigail, now beginning to anger- she can't believe it.: I have something better than hope, I think!
Proctor: Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin for you more.

Abigail: You're surely sportin with me.”(Miller 21).

This quote shows that John wants nothing to do with her and wants to let Abigail know that he's with Elizabeth. Later in the play John had the the proof to prove Abigail as a liar but he was lacking evidence and no one would probably believe him. When Proctor was talking to Hail, Hail asked John if he faltered Abigail, then John said “I falter nothing, but I may wonder if my story will be credited in such a court [...].”(Miller 64) This example shows how John wants nothing to do with her, and wants her to go down on what she said and lied about Elizabeth and accused her of stabbing her with a needle. Also in court John was so sick of Abigail and her lies and he was done when she said that John wants her, so John had enough after that and John really wanted to take down Abigail by calling her an insulting name in front of …show more content…

Proctor, trembling, his life collapsing about him: I have known her, sir. I have known her.”(Miller 102)
I feel like Miller wanted to kind of point out the John Proctor might seem nice and forgiving in the beginning of the but wanted to change it up and make him kind of the bad guy in this conversation between Danforth, John, and Abigail. Even though some people may say that it's not Abigail's fault that John had to die and was the one who wanted a relationship, but John had a option and that option was not to be with Abigail and stay with his wife Elizabeth. Also John Proctor wanted to stand up with his life and was willing to die for her and not Abigail. With these reasons I think John gave his best efforts to let Abby know he wants nothing to do with her and to stay away from him and Elizabeth. In addition If John Proctor just said that he saw the devil, he would've been alive but he didn't because he cared about his wife Elizabeth a lot. John's wife Elizabeth His wife is being put on trial for something she didn't do and the dialogue when this happens is: “Elizabeth: What signifies a needle?
Hale: Mary-you charge a cold and cruel murder on Abigail.
Mary Warren: Murder? I charge
