There are two kinds of truth that exist. Sometimes the truth can leave you in satisfaction, other times in aversion. The protagonist in the novel The Giver, Jonas, discovers the harsh truth that the Utopian society he lives in is not as perfect as he envisioned it. In this futuristic society, there are no such things as pain, fear, war, hatred or prejudice. Jonas becomes the selected person to receive the painful memories, in order to keep the peace within the community. However, as Jonas begins his new journey as The Receiver of memory, he suddenly realizes how bland and empty life in his community really is. Jonas becomes frustrated because he is not able to share his joy with his close ones and seethes when he learns the veracity of a “release” which means death. However, they had given up all of it for tranquility and harmony. Despite the lack of emotions, they also do not have freedom, humanity, individuality. No one is able to make a choice of their own because everything is already organized and decided for them. The truth finally hits Jonas, the community in which he lives in is not perfect. Because in reality, the people lost everything they had, including their own humanity. In his society, killing babies is normal because people do not realize what they are actually doing. The truth is revealed to Jonas little by little as the Giver past to him to memories. Jonas first sees the good aspects that existed in the past, before the “Sameness” following with the meaning of the “Release.” He learns from the truth that he has to change the way people are living because it is morally wrong and unfair.
