In the story “Tthe Mmiracle Wworker” by William Gibson, Annie shows discipline, determination and independence through her actions. Annie used her determination to succeed in teaching Helen. Her discipline plays a major role in helping to shape Helen into an obedient girl with manners and her independence helps her stay focused on her job of teaching Helen. She does this to try and communicate “yes, you can open the bag”. She knew that Helen would need as much time as she could get to learn all there is to know about blind/deaf communicating. Starting immediately shows that Annie is determined to achieve this difficult goal of communication. Understanding this goal and advancing forward with it also shows determination. Annie’s determination to succeed grows as her time and relationship with helen advances. Annie remains optimistic when interacting with Helen. She was constantly trying to better Helens lifestyle no matter how difficult the task. A large amount of time and effort was spend repeatedly trying to teach Helen how to eat with manners. Annie places a spoon in Helens hand trying to communicate that helen should be using this utensil to eat, Helen quickly throws it away. She screams and tries to run away from the forced task. Annie tolerates Helens lack of obedience while continuing to put spoons in her hand. The way Helen behaves makes it very difficult for Annie to teach anything.
