Driving with friends, playing a new album for the first time and getting rowdy. Rap music is listened to everywhere. People love all kinds of rap and hip hop, but there are some artists stand out above the rest. These are the true poets. The artists that are capable of telling a story, the artists that are lyrically superior, and have a shady past from which they draw motivation and inspiration. Typically, the greatest artists will have similar qualities that set them apart from others.

All great rappers have the ability to tell a story in their songs. Eminem does that in almost every song he writes. Songs like Mockingbird, When I’m Gone and Stan are some examples. And what makes them so good is that they are real and so is the emotion heard …show more content…

Some of the greatest songs come from an artist’s shady or rough past. It’s something we hear about often in hip hop. At the top of this list, we have Notorious B.I.G. Biggie grew up in the streets of Brooklyn. He lived with his mother who struggled to get by, and he was dealing and hustling in the streets. He reflects on all this in songs and uses that raw emotion and aggression to depict the dark days of his past, making it incredible music. Another rapper on the list is Tupac Shakur. Not only was he on the streets growing up, but he was in and out of prison. We hear about his crazy days behind bars in multiple verses, which can make the song amazing because it’s real. Tupac uses these intense and often terrifying stories of his past as a tool to make his songs pretty hardcore. Unfortunately, he was only able to get 2 albums in before being killed. Finally, we have Ice Cube. We always heard how raw N.W.A. was but it wasn’t until the movie came out that we learned to struggle of their climb to riches. From being harassed by police in the streets of Compton, California, to having his school bus boarded by a bunch of gang members, Ice Cube has seen a lot. He lived in a place with weekly and almost daily deaths. He even chased people off his hotel floor with assault rifles while on tour. Because of his upbringing, he has a hardcore sort of shoot to kill style when he raps. He has an aggressive personality which is reflected in his music and
