There are certain strategies people can employ in order to make the most of their time in tutoring situations. As a tutor, it is important to have an open mind and to allow tutees to take responsibility. Tutors should guide their students in the most efficient ways possible to better their papers and make the students more confident within a certain time period. One method that is very useful for planning out time spent together is mapping. Mapping provides both tutors and students with an end goal, and along the way, it shows them places that they want to review and discuss. Creating a map to outline the session together provides both parties with a method of clear communication. The map should be mostly fabricated by the student, with a beginning, an agenda of what the student would like to accomplish, and knowledge of a time constraint. Some people may be shy, disinterested, confused or flat out frustrated. Having an idea of what they can expect to accomplish and what things they should keep in mind can help students communicate better with tutors. Writing down what they wish to accomplish can be helpful because it gives students a place to write down ideas as well as provides a visual reminder of their goals. I also realized that it is crucial to remember that students need to go at their own pace. Even if the paper is not perfect, it is okay. Going too fast and rushing students might get a better paper faster but with a cost. Students are more likely to lose interest and feel frustrated. It is better to focus on students and how they feel about themselves, including their attitude towards the experience they are receiving rather than be obsessed with perfecting the
