The Bielski Brothers is written by Peter Duffy. It is a biography about three men and was published in 2004. Three brothers from the Bielski family lead Jews in the forests of the Soviet Union during World War II. They rescued and protected Jews from the ferocious Nazis; they were able to fight off Nazis and build a village in the middle of a forest. Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski are responsible for over 1,200 Jewish lives. The oldest of the brothers was Tuvia Bielski. He was charismatic, handsome, humble, and a strong leader. He was commander of the Bielski partisans, also known as the Kalinin and Ordzhonikidze detachments. Throughout the war, Tuvia’s main goal was to save as many Jews as he possibly could. Even though he was a strong and strict leader, he was compassionate and kind. You would often see tears come to his eyes when he heard someone’s story about the ghettos. The brothers were born in the village of Stankevich. During the war, they constantly moved to many different places to hide from the Nazis. Their main base was in the Novogrudek and Lida area, which had two large ghettos. Their gentile friend, Konstantin Koslovsky, who lived near the forest, guided many Jewish escapees to group. Since they lived in the forest, they had to deal with the harsh winters, determined Germans, and low supplies. Toward the end of the war, the Bielski partisans hid in the Naliboki Puscha forest.
