“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages” (Nietzsche). Love is brought together by two people who truly connect and mean something to one another. They must be friends before they can be loved ones. This quotes relates to Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare because the love in this play happens leads to marriage too fast for them to be truly in love. If this play were to continue after the fifth act, their marriages would most likely be unhappy. Even though the love in this play might not work out in the end, the characters seem to be content in the present. True feelings that one has for another person can make them act a certain way. In Act 3 Scene 2 Line 34, Toby says, “Challenge me the counts youth to fight with him. Hurt him in eleven places. My Niece shall take note of it, and assure thyself, there is no love-broker in the world can prevail in man’s commendation with woman than report of valor” (Shakespeare 103). In this scene, Toby is peer pressuring Andrew to challenge a sword fight with Cesario [Viola] to take the love of Olivia. He surprisingly expresses his love for Olivia to his friends and they smoothly get him to stick around and fight for his lover. It is obvious after watching this scene that Andrew does not want violence, but he does want to catch the attention of Olivia so he simply agrees to the challenge even though he could have been harmed in this sword fight.
