Recommended: Impact of social networking on society

In the age of rapid progress of the computer and mobile technologies, social networks are widely used by different groups of society in personal and professional goals. Governmental agencies are not excluded from this process and social networks become an important instrument for the police departments. The study is focused on the investigation of the Twitter usage by the police forces.
Literature Review
Despite the fact that social media occupy huge place in the modern life, there are no sufficient scientific researches about their impact on the society. The subject of social networks as a data source is widely revealed in the news and blog records (Wasim). It includes direct messages, mentioning of the police and its actions, retweets and retweets with comments of the data shared by the police. Therefore, the sampling procedure could be defined as a systematic probability sampling.
Demographics/Age and Gender
The authorized accounts of the Canadian police departments were examined. Age and gender were not taken into consideration. The demographics of the study defines the chosen official and personal accounts as a representative sample of the police forces and could be used in generalization purposes.
Variables and Measures
The independent variable in the research is the use of Twitter by the society and the law enforcement agencies, while the dependent variable is the expected change in the effectiveness in work of the police and the possible improvement of their public image. The authors used the Twitter platform for collecting and analyzing of the digital data, audio and video files shared and followed by the representatives of the police and simple users.
