“… he gripped up two of my men at once and dashed them down upon the ground as though they had been puppies.” (21) This was the first Homeric simile that caught my eye. This Homeric simile gave me the impression that a giant was throwing humans brutally against the ground. With that small clip of a scene many people may predict that the giant kills everyone.
In book nine of Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus displays his intelligence, patience, and hubris when killing the Cyclops, Polyphemus. When Odysseus meets Polyphemus he introduces himself as “outis” meaning nobody. Lying about his name shows Odysseus’ intelligence. When Polyphemus fell asleep, Odysseus stabbed him in the eye and he woke up screaming “Nobody’s killing me”. (9: 455)
People and their actions are what determines their future. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus starts out with numerous ships and men. However, the only one who ends up surviving the multitude of obstacles is himself. The reason for this outcome is supported in the transition paragraph at the end of Book 12, which says “Odysseus tries to persuade his men to bypass Thrinacia, the island of the sun god, Helios, but they insist on landing.”
“A Hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” - Christopher Reeves. In The Odyssey by Homer, a mythological story is told about a twenty-year long journey a mortal named Odysseus-King of Ithaca-undergoes. In the movie plot it includes that the kingdom of Argos will be destroyed by Hades. Argos needs a hero and they ask Perseus to save their kingdom.
Another trait is leadership, as he ordered his crew so that they can go home safely. Also, self-restraint is important because they couldn't rush through the dark deep sea. In The Odyssey, the twenty years Odysseus was away from his family, Ithaca, and people took a greater toll on him than anyone else. Life is like The Odyssey, Homer’s epic poem, because you will always have problems that will try and hold you back from your goal like Odysseus did. The goal I have for my life is to be an electrician. I know I will have challenges taking the tests and learning the math, but eventually you will make it if you really care and try even though there are many times and temptations that will make you wanna give up, or do something different with your life. If you stick to it like Odysseus did, you’ll make it. One problem to reaching my goal is wanting to quit and give up or take the easy way out.

The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
Is perseverance is an essential human quality? In life, we are faced with endless misfortune and difficult decisions. A person can think of how they do in each difficult situation they face the same way a character in a movie goes through the character arc. You have two options, Accept that your family can't afford it or raise the money needed by getting a job.
Odyssey Paragraph Odysseus, in the book The Odyssey by Homer, and I both showed self restraint in multiple different ways. One way Odysseus demonstrates self control is after he stabs the cyclops eye and the book quotes “Arms thrown wide for any silly man who bolted” (907). This showed moderation by him not rushing by the cyclopes and instead waiting for a better time. Another way Odysseus showed Caution was when he and his men went on the island with the lotus and Odysseus said “clear the beach no one taste the lotus” (898).

Throughout the story Odysseus portrays many different characteristics that belong to his personality as he tries to make his way back home to Ithaca. One of Odysseus’ traits is patience, which is used with many different characters as Odysseus uses this skill in his plans and strategies. The trait patience is important because, it is needed in real life scenarios, and can help keep someone calm or composed in tense situations. Patience also is useful because it can help an individual to be able to wait for long periods of times without getting upset or frustrated.
