In the story, Two Kinds by Amy Tan the mother and the daughter have many differences. The narrator and daughter, Jing Mei, is very different from her mother. The mother lost her family and her belongings when she lived in China and then when she moved to America she wanted her daughter to become a prodigy. In the beginning, Jing Mei is very excited, but as the story goes on she starts to become bored and she gives up. They are very different in work ethics and their desires. They are different in their work ethics in many ways. The mom is very hard working and does not give up. She works hard so her daughter can do good things because her mother lost her family and she wants to live the american dream. For instance, it stated “...My head dropped on one arm.” on page 51, this means she got bored and she gave up. She got tired of the test that her mom gave her. The mother has many different desires than her daughter. She wants Jing Mei to be a prodigy but Jing Mei wants to be herself. They argue over what they want to do. For example is says on page 49, “...My mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple.” The mother thinks Jing Mei can do amazing things but she just gives up. The mother also pushes Jing Mei but she gets frustrated at her mother. On the other hand Jing Mei is very different from her mother. She wants to be herself. She does not want to be forced to do anything by her mother either. To clarify, it said on page 60 “I had been waiting for her to start shouting, so I could shout back and cry and blame her for all my misery.” As a result of this, the mother did not make her do anything else. The mother and Jing Mei went to being a normal family. Therefor Jing Mei and her mother a very different.
