Two major themes including “social exchanges” and “fragmentation” were observed via the legislative broadcast from March 15th, 2018 in the New Hampshire state legislature. Roughly one hour of floor proceedings from the New Hampshire state senate legislature was viewed. The 23 or so members from each district across New Hampshire debated and were part of roll call votes, as members would bring up certain amendments or bills that they would presumably emanate from their towns. One main theme that will get illuminated is fragmentation across many districts in New Hampshire. It was evident each state senator wanted legislation passed that benefits their constituents. Therefore, if legislation is being debated that would evidently hurt their district, the representatives are certainly not afraid to voice their objection. Moreover, another theme that was certainly illuminated was the idea of social exchange and representation in the legislature. Essentially, it is important for members to work with others on a piece of legislation that would benefit the whole state, and not negatively affect another piece of legislation. As it was explained, “policy making is a multistage process that involves an immeasurable amount of social interaction from start to finish” (Peoples 2008, 457).
