The time period 600 BCE – 1500 CE was bringing many new innovations to trade throughout Eurasia. The extensive Silk Road connected European countries to the far eastern Asian countries (China and India), allowing the rare goods from China to find their way to European markets. New technologies in maritime trade included the production of lateen sails and dhow’s in the Indian region of trade. These technologies allowed trade efficiency to increase allowing states merchants and governments to make more money. Religious people and Statesmen had different viewpoints on this new wealth accumulation.

The Silk was a trading route that was created during the Han Dynasty. The trading route began in China and acted as the main route for trading through the different parts of Eurasia. There were many different goods that were traded along the route.
From the time period 600 CE to 1750 CE, Asia went through major changes. Due to the Mongolian peoples however, China was able to return to their cultural roots after Mongolian dominance, but the Islamic Middle Eastern Empire drastically changed their culture after the Mongol’s influence. The most important continuity throughout China from 600 CE to 1750 CE was their development of new technology. The Sui Dynasty had three technological advancements that were immensely impactful. The first advancement was the Grand Canal.
These ideas were Buddhism and Islam. These two ideas spread from one part of the silk road to the other. This is a change because these were two new ideas that were presented after 200 B.C.E. Also many other new ideas were spread, many ideas which weren't present in the year of 200 B.C.E. These ideas helped influence many new things. Another change was that new empires or regions began to trade, and the regions or empires that used to the have either fallen or no longer traded.
The Silk Road became relevant around 130 B.C.E when the Han dynasty of China opened trade until 1453 C.E when the Ottoman Empire closed off trade with the West. While this society grew, there were aspects of culture and politics stayed the same but many changes also occurred. As the empire developed, family units and social classes remained stagnant. Despite these continuities, changes such as the popularity of Buddhism within society due to Indian missionaries and a shift in political rule occurred. During the time period 100 C.E. to 600 C.E. the family unit system remained intact despite the intellectual advances.
The era of the Han dynasty in China, simply referred to as ‘Han China,’ was an extremely prominent one, with power that almost rivaled the Romans themselves. During this period of China, achievements and accomplishments reached new heights as the Silk Road opened, which allowed connection with the western world. However, even with all this, Han China still fell, thanks to opposing forces in the form of nomadic tribes, several natural disasters that were interpreted as angry messages from the gods, and internal/political unrest. During the Han dynasty and the opening of the Silk Road, there were several aggressive, nomadic tribes that centered around the Asian area.
The Silk Road was a complex network of trading routes that spanned from eastern Europe to China, that allowed many goods to travel from city to city. During the Silk Road’s main prominence from around 200 B.C.E. to 1450 C.E., many changes took place - including ones that have drastically altered societies with change in both social hierarchies and major religions. However, even with the plethora of cultural changes that took place, a few aspects of the societies of the time stayed consistent, most noticeably the desire for luxury goods by the upper class. The Silk Road resulted in many changes to the social hierarchies of the time, especially in the treatment of women and merchants. In the second-wave civilizations prior to the road’s prominence, women and merchant were viewed as much lower members of society.
Not only did the Silk Road enhance the exchange of goods and innovations, but also the spread of religion. The Sild Road spread and built upon the ideas of Buddhism and Islam during the post classical era making it a “Cultural Bridge” bewteen Asia and Europe. During the seventh century, Arab muslims traveled to China along the Silk Road with intentions to spread Islam. Islam spread throughout China, resulting in Islamic scientific and medical advancements to be adopted. Islam was adopted and adapted, diffused with other cultures along the Silk Road.
The response of the spread of Buddhism in China was met with a variety of attitudes. Many Confucianists took offense to the introduction of a new way of life and questioned the validity of the religion. Buddhist monasteries that were constructed along the Silk Roads offered sanctuaries to merchants where they could rest on their journeys. This offered another incentive to merchants to spread Buddhism. Although Buddhism may have never become to the major religion in China especially, it introduced new ideas that were sometimes assimilated into Chinese culture. Through the Indian Oceans trade network, Buddhism spread throughout Southeast Asia where it quickly became a major influencer. Evidence of this can be found in the construction of large Buddhist monasteries such as Borobudur in Java.
Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo are both known for being the world’s greatest long distance travelers, however, because of their different backgrounds it had influenced the way in which each traveler wrote about their experiences in China. This contrast is dominantly believed to have been influenced by their different religious backgrounds, and how each had viewed the world. This was ultimately is influenced by ones cultural and religious background. In this essay I will examine the different experiences that both Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo had experienced during their visits in China. Ibn Battuta, a well-educated Islamic scholar born and raised by a wealthy family in Tangier, Morocco, he had begun his journey at the age of 21.
