Transcendentalism can be described a philosophy that asserts the primacy of the spiritual and transcendental over the material and observational. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, many transcendental writers emerged. Many of who wrote about different transcendental ideals. When comparing the two poems, “anyone lived in a pretty how town” by E. E. Cummings, and “Tia Chucha” by Luis Rodriguez, one can undoubtedly see the differences between some of the transcendentalist values. In this poem the author E. E. Cummings also uses things like repetition, punctuation, and word order to convey certain messages to the reader. Cummings uses repetition to instill an enormous importance upon nature. Four aspect of nature (Sun, moon, stars, rain) are repeated three different times. The four seasons (spring summer autumn winter) are also repeated three different times, with each time the order being changed. This is done to place great importance on nature and also create an effect of time passing throughout the poem. With all of this, E. E. Cummings is able to create an overall theme; us as humans and society are not as important as we would like to think. Nature is larger than all of us and will continue to thrive long after we are gone. Although both written by transcendentalists, each of these poems offer a different platform of transcendental thinking. E. E. Cummings’ “anyone lived in a pretty how town” is about the dominance of nature over humans. Luis Rodriguez’s “Tia Chucha” is about living carefree and having pride in individuality. Both of these poems describe different transcendental beliefs. Although not similar, each poem makes us question or actions as a person and as a society; which is exactly what author during the transcendental era had hoped to
