Two significant figures during the 1950s were Harry Truman and Douglas MacArthur. Truman became the 33rd president of the United States after the unfortunate death of Franklin Roosevelt. He was the one who decided to drop an atomic bomb on Japan and help Europe after the war. Douglas MacArthur was an American general who played an important role in the Pacific theater in World War II. He was well known, and people would describe him as somewhat self-centered. The relationship between these two men was anything but excellent. They were hateful toward each other, and as a result, tension grew. These men dd not get along.
