Roberta and Twyla meet each other at a shelter at eight years old. Twyla wanted her own room she didn’t want to share a room especially a room with Roberta because her mother told her that people like Roberta smell funny. She became to be Roberta friend later and didn’t listen to what her mother painted about the type of people Roberta mother stated. They stick together and became good friends they kept each other company especially when the older girls would bully them at the shelter.“I liked the way she understood things so fast. Roberta was there with friend. She sees Twyla and said that they’re going to see a Jimi Hendrix performance and since Twyla doesn’t know who he is, Roberta took offense by calling her a asshole so Twyla end up acting out and asking her how Roberta mother is replaying about her health. The next encounter Twyla is married, and Roberta is married as well. they both meet at a racial tension because Twyla son has to take a bus to school because he was going to a different school and Roberta was outside the school protesting and Twyla didn’t understand why so her and Twyla got into a racial tension. They also bring up the times with Maggie and Roberta even lies about Maggie to get Twyla upset.Twyla was concerned about what Roberta was saying about Maggie during their last encounter Roberta approaches Twyla and bring up the issue she admits that the two girls never really kicked Maggie, but she had wanted to kick her and that she thought Maggie was black out the time. “you were right. We didn’t kick her. It was the girls. Only them. But, well, I wanted to. I really wanted them to hurt her. I said we did it too. You and me, but that's not true. And I don't want you to carry that around.
